New Program in Autism Will Launch in the Fall
Virginia is tied with California for first in the per capita percentage of children with autism. To meet the needs of educators and parents in this region, Averett is currently conducting a feasibility study and developing a business plan for the development of a Center of Excellence in Autism. The first phase calls for the creation of a 9 credit hour sequence of instruction for teachers who need training in the area of autism spectrum disorders. Teachers completing the courses will earn a Certificate of Autism Studies. Classes may begin as early as this fall. Plans call for the program to expand to include a parent resource center and training for parents and paraprofessionals.
