| Changes in Technology and E-mail for Students and Alumni The IT Department has implemented a number of changes on the Main campus and in the various regions over the past six months. Infrastructure Improvements: A new fiber run of 48 strands has been put in place from Main to Frith and is the last major piece of fiber improvements on the Danville campus. This new line of fiber should help connectivity problems in Frith, Danville, Pritchett and Alumni Hall. Additionally, all dorms are now fully wired and have new fiber connectivity to them. An ongoing program of switch replacements is in progress to replace 8-year-old equipment on the Danville campus. A proposal has been submitted to significantly increase Internet bandwidth for the Danville campus since it is averaging 95 percent of its current bandwidth, which affects the speed of Internet access through campus Computer Replacements An ongoing program is in place to standardize all campus computers on XP pro and Office 2003. Machines are either being replaces or being refurbished for the new software. By June, all campus computers should have been upgraded. GPS regional computers have been replaced and are now standardized with new cabinetry. Lab 118 on the Main campus will be replaced over the summer and computers have been purchased Classroom Improvements New sound systems will be installed in all classrooms both within the GPS system and on the Main campus. The new system allows for easier sound control and eliminates separate amplifiers and switch boxes. USB ports will be extended for easier access on the CAT units in the Danville classrooms to encourage more usage of flash drives E-mail System Student and alumni e-mail accounts are being transferred to Google and should be up and running by the end of June. New e-mail addresses will be A new e-mail system is being researched for faculty and staff and will hopefully be put into place this summer. Other Changes E2Campus was configured and deployed The firewall has been updated to the current version A new accounting system and server is being put in place A new document imaging server and software has been installed PowerCampus will be upgraded in May to a more current version A new ID card system has been configured for Security A proposal to move the computer center to a more secure location has been presented to the administration |
