12. ERIC Journals v. ERIC Documents

The ERIC database contains both articles from journals in the education field and book chapters, reviews, and dissertations. In addition, it contains ERIC documents. These documents are research and technical reports, curricular materials, and program descriptions. For many of these documents the full text is provided in PDF. For some of your assignments, ERIC documents may be useful for your research. Many of them were based on original research that was completed for governmental entities or education organizations, but simply were never published.

The ERIC journal citations will provide direct links to the full text (journals published by the American Psychological Association), or the ARTICLE LINKER will link you to the full text in other databases or provide information where the full text may be procured (microfiche/film; bound journals; ILL).

How do I recognize ERIC Journals from ERIC Documents?

ERIC journals will have a journal name with volume and issue numbers. It will also have an "accession number" that begins with "EJ." ERIC documents will have an accession number that begins with "ED."

It is advised that you ask your instructor whether you can use ERIC documents for a particular assignment.
