Housing Exceptions

Averett University On-Campus Residency Requirement

Averett University is a residential university that requires its traditional, undergraduate students who live outside a 30 miles radius of Danville to live on campus for three years, except as stated below. Averett is committed to a vibrant residential community and to the educational value of living in such a setting.

Exceptions to this policy are:

Undergraduate students 23 years of age or older prior to the next period of enrollment
Married students [no married/family student housing]
Students who are parents who care for a dependant child.
Students who have served 180 days of consecutive military service prior to enrollment.
Students who live with an immediate blood relative within 30 miles of the Danville campus. Immediate blood relative is defined as mother, father, first aunt, uncle or grandparent.
Students who have accumulated 90 credit hours or will earn 90 credits hours by the end of the spring semester of a given academic year. Such classifications are made once/year prior to the spring housing selection process. Anticipated credits for summer or fall sessions of the following year do not count toward the 90 credit hours.
Students who have lived in Averett housing for three years
Students who are independent, emancipated adults bearing the full cost of their education
Transfer students who have lived on their own for at least one year prior to entering Averett
International students.

Students who are not in one of the above categories but desire to move off campus must petition to do so. The housing exemption committee evaluates such requests. Though each request for a residency waiver is evaluated on its own merits, most of the waivers granted fall into one of two categories:

Unforeseen changes in financial status.
Medical exceptions.

The Committee does not exempt students from the residency requirement solely on the basis of the following:

Environmental factors such as “the dorms are too loud” or “I can study better if I live off campus.”
Dislike of the food service.
Lack of parking on campus.
Perceived lack of amenities in the residence halls.
Failure to get ones choice of housing in the room selection process or failure to identify a roommate.
Costs associate with living on campus, i.e. one can live more inexpensively off campus.
Friends are getting an off-campus house to live-in.
Signing a lease with a third party renter. Students are strongly encouraged NOT to make such commitments without a release from the residency requirement.

Requests for waiver of the residency requirement may be made in the form of a letter detailing specific reasons for such an exception. All requests are considered in the Spring preceding the academic year a student is requesting to live off campus.

Early Request Deadline: April 1, 2010

*Must participate in housing selection if not approved.
